Dr Andrew Smith

Psychologist, PhD

Dr. Smith’s clinical journey began in his third week of basic training on 9/11/2001. He had joined the military to see the world, but as the world changed, so did his mission. He deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, forming lifelong friendships and observing firsthand how it is to struggle with life after combat and life after the military. This experience established his passion for improving the lives of service members, trauma survivors, and people who are wired to run towards the fire instead of away. Following his enlistment, he began a different educational journey: an undergraduate degree in rehabilitation science from Penn State, a Master’s degree in Trauma Psychology at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Tech. He completed his residency at the VA Salt Lake City Healthcare System and postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He went on to work as a staff psychologist at the VA Salt Lake City, to found and direct the Occupational Trauma Program at the University of Utah, and to found and direct a behavioral health clinic for physicians in training at Dartmouth. He is a Pat Tillman Military Scholar and Associate Research Professor at the Lyda Hill Institute for Human Resilience. As a therapist, Dr. Smith helps clients get "unstuck" from the ruts and patterns that make life feel like it has lost its meaning and purpose. Many of today’s solutions for mental health are limited by a "disease-centric" model that focuses on labels and symptoms. This can feel disconnecting, leaving people feeling that therapy is missing the “flourishing” and “meaning” side of life. Dr. Smith’s approach is built on the idea that suffering is a shared human experience, not a personal failing. He helps you break out of old patterns and reconnect with your values, your purpose, and the people who matter most. Therapy modalities include: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Problem Solving Therapy, and a number of specific evidence based treatments for diagnoses such as depression, PTSD, and anxiety. Dr. Smith sees individuals and couples. In-person and remote therapy sessions are available. Dr. Smith is licensed in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Utah, and can also practice telehealth in most states in the country using a license granted through the Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT), granted by the PSYPACT Commission. PSYPACT is an interstate compact offering qualified psychologists the opportunity to practice telepsychology in multiple states.
